Thirty-two Comisana ewes at late lactation were used in two trials carried out during late spring in 2 consecutive years, with the aim to evaluate the effect of the duration of grazing on herbage intake and performance. In each trial, 16 pluriparous Comisana lactating ewes were equally divided into two groups which grazed in two separate areas of natural pasture from 11:00 to 15:00 h (group 4H) or from 10:00 to 17:00 (group 7H). A concentrate mixture (500 g/day) was also offered to each ewe. The mean maximum temperature was, respectively, 23.5 ± 3.8 °C during experiment 1 and 27.0 ± 3.1 °C during experiment 2. Probably as a consequence of the differences in climatic conditions, the results on herbage intake and milk production were different during the two trials. Herbage dry matter intake was not affected by the duration of grazing during trial 1, whereas it was significantly lower in 4H group compared to that in 7H group (0.67 vs 1.02 kg/day; P < 0.001) during trial 2. It could be hypothesised that while with lower environmental temperature (trial 1), the 4H ewes were able to reach good intake levels despite grazing during the hottest hours; with higher temperatures throughout the trial (trial 2), the 4H ewes reduced ingestion. Milk production was higher in 4H group during trial 1 (778 vs 707 g/day; P = 0.006), whereas it was not affected by the number of hours of grazing during trial 2, despite the higher intake levels reached by the 7H group. In conclusion, 3 extra hours of grazing for ewes at late lactation on a low quality pasture could be nullified in terms of yield response.  相似文献

Spontaneous colonization of mine tailing dams by plants is a potential tool for phytostabilization of such reservoirs. However, the physical and chemical properties of each mine tailings deposit determine the success of natural plant establishment. The plant Baccharis linearis is the main native nanophanerophyte species (evergreen sclerophyllous shrub) that naturally colonizes abandoned copper tailings dams in arid to semiarid north-central Chile. This study compare growth of B. linearis against the physical and chemical properties of a Technosol derived from copper mine tailings. Five sites inside the deposit were selected based on B. linearis vegetation density (VD), at two soil sampling depths under the canopy of adult individuals. Physical and chemical properties of tailings samples and nutrient concentrations in tailings and plants were each determined. Some morphological features of the plants (roots and aerial parts) were also quantified. There were significant differences in soil available water capacity (AW) and relative density (Rd) at different VD. Sites with low AW and high Rd had lower nutrient concentrations and higher Zn content in tailings, decreased infection by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and increased fine root abundance and root hair length in individual plants. In contrast, higher AW, which was positively correlated with fine particles and organic matter content, had a positive effect on vegetation coverage, increased N and P contents in tailings, and increased N contents in leaf tissues, even when available N and P levels in tailings were low. Multiple constraints, such as low AW, N, P, and B contents and high Zn concentrations in the tailings restricted vegetation coverage, but no phenotypic differences were observed between individuals. Thus, in order to promote dense coverage by B. linearis, water retention in these tailings must be improved by increasing colloidal particles (organic and/or inorganic) contents, which have a positive effect on colonization by this species.  相似文献

The electrochemical elimination of the herbicide diquat dibromide (DQ) in an undivided electrochemical cell (Condiacell®-type cell) and an H-type cell (a divided electrochemical cell) using boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes is reported for the first time. The degradation of essentially 100% of the DQ present was achieved in the undivided electrochemical cell and ca. 92% in the H-type cell. Nearly 80% of the total organic carbon (TOC) and of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) were removed after 5 h of treatment at different current densities (i.e., 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mA/cm2 for the undivided cell, and 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 mA/cm2 for the H-type cell) with a maximum specific energy consumption of approximately 150 kWh kg?1 of COD degraded in the undivided cell, and 300 kWh kg?1 of COD in the H-type cell. Energy consumption of about 0.30 kWh g?1 of TOC occurred in the undivided electrochemical cell and 2.0 in the H-type cell. In spite of obtaining similar percentages of DQ degradation and of COD and TOC removal, a smaller energy usage was required in the undivided cell since smaller current densities were employed. Best results were obtained with the undivided cell, since it required a smaller current density to obtain virtually the same percentage of DQ degradation and removal of COD and TOC. The results obtained herein show that the use of electrochemical advanced oxidation processes may be a good alternative for DQ degradation in polluted water.  相似文献

The optimum concentration of anaesthetic used to facilitate fish handling can be determined based on induction and recovery time, among other factors. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the essential oil of Aloysia triphylla (EOAT) as an anaesthetic in the handling of Nile tilapia juveniles. Nile tilapias exemplars were immersed at 0 (control group), 10, 20, 30, 40, 80, 150, 300 and 450 μL L?1 EOAT to evaluate sedation, anaesthesia and recovery time. The stress response was evaluated by the determination of plasma glucose, cortisol, lactate and paraoxonase levels in anaesthetized (300 μL L?1 EOAT) and non‐anaesthetized fish. Fillets from both groups were evaluated for organoleptic characteristics (taste and odour). Concentrations of 80–450 μL L?1 EOAT were effective in inducing anaesthesia. There was a significant reduction in plasma cortisol levels one hour after handling in individuals anaesthetized with 300 μL L?1 EOAT compared to the control group. Tasters did not detect differences in fillet taste and odour between fish exposed and not exposed to EOAT. A concentration of 300 μL L?1 EOAT is recommended for handling Nile tilapia because it presents good anaesthetic induction and recovery times, causes a reduction in plasma cortisol levels one hour after handling and does not affect the taste or odour of the fillets.  相似文献

Plants are sources of secondary metabolites, and some are rich in essential oils (EOs), which possess a bioactive pharmacological importance as sedatives and anaesthetics that have been experimentally demonstrated in fish. In search of products with lower residual effects and optimization of the production based on the local flora, the properties of the EO of Aloysia triphylla (EOAT) have been investigated. The samples of two years were analysed for the percentage variability of the chemical composition and the totality of the major components according to the season. Limonene, citral isomers (α and β), caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide and spathulenol were the main constituents of the EOAT throughout these two years. In the second year, caryophyllene predominates over its oxide in all seasons; however, in the first year, it occurs only in autumn and winter. Seasonal pools of EOs were made for the biennium obtaining four samples, and silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) juveniles were subjected to a concentration range of 20–800 μl/L EOAT in order to assess induction and recovery times of anaesthesia. The relationships between percentages of individual components in EOAT and time to induce deep anaesthesia indicate that its activity may be attributed to the association of several of its components.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary addition of the essential oil from Lippia alba (EOLA) on growth performance, biochemical and haematological variables and survival after Aeromonas spp. infection of Nile tilapia juveniles (Oreochromis niloticus). Five diets were evaluated with increasing levels of EOLA (0.0 control; 0.25; 0.50; 1.0; and 2.0 ml/kg diet). After 45 days of feeding, the fish were infected with Aeromonas spp. followed by a 14‐day period of observation. There was no mortality during growth assessment. The addition of 2.0 ml EOLA/kg diet improved feed conversion ratio and condition factor and increased lysozyme activity and haematocrit (Hct), and decreased plasma globulin levels compared to the control group. The survival of fish infected with Aeromonas spp. was higher in those fed with 2.0 ml EOLA/kg diet than in fish fed with 0.0–0.5 ml EOLA/kg diet. We concluded that the inclusion of 2.0 ml EOLA/kg diet is recommended for Nile tilapia juveniles, because it improved feed conversion, Hct and immunological activity, did not provoke metabolic changes, and increased survival after Aeromonas spp. infection.  相似文献
